Nature Recovery Teams

Nature Recovery Teams

The DCAN Nature Recovery work has three strands:

1. Hedges Team

Hedgerows form and important part of our landscape and provides a haven for wildlife. By restoring hedges and planting new ones we are creating a rich habitat for the birds and mammals which live in them; also by acting as wind breaks they can reduce soil erosion.

The main work of the hedges team is the Great Big Dorset Hedge project. We are always looking for volunteers for surveying, filling gaps and planting.

2. Rivers and Beaches

DCAN works in collaboration with other groups, especially the River Lim Action group and the River Char Action Group. Citizen Science and River Fly monitoring is also done through Dorset Landscapes and Dorset Wildlife Trust.

3 Land Use

We aim to established a network to support and enable local projects in the following areas:

  • Support farmers in growing food sustainably while fostering wildlife on their land.
  • Tackling soil erosion and degradation.
  • Tree protection - understanding the regulations and how to defend our trees
  • Lifelines projects- encouraging community interaction, investigating the use of herbicides / pesticides and alternative practices
  • Wildlife restoration networks / corridors.
  • Participating in the Dorset Council’s nature partnerships consultations
All of these actions welcome the input of volunteers. Please get in touch if you would like to know more.
