Across the UK, community action groups are in the news for the work they’re doing to clean up their local river. Dorset is no exception. But the range of challenges is huge and the problems faced are complex.
If you’re part of an existing river action group, come and compare notes, hear what others are doing and see how we can coordinate for better outcomes.
If you’re wanting to set up or join a local group, come and find out where to startand what to do.
If you’re on a Town or Parish Council and want to know more about what can be done, come and find out what others are doing.
The issues include:
- Sewage spills from water company storm overflows.
- Run-off from fields and roads
- Slurry storage and containment
- Poorly maintained domestic septic tanks
- Agricultural pesticides
- Tick and flea treatments used on pets
- Flooding and natural flood management
- Bathing beach designation
- Water safety in places where people swim and play
- Storm water from roofs and driveways overloading the mains sewage system
- How best to measure and assess water quality for ecological and human health
- Counting invertebrates
- How to work with MPs, the Environment Agency and the water companies
- Getting funding
Please come along to the event and share what you’re doing or learn from others. There’ll be a chance for all river groups in the audience to give a brief presentation/talk (we will organise this once you’ve signed up), followed by a Q&A/discussion session.
Dorset’s River Action Groups (and Dorset’s rivers) are stronger together.
